The Mothership is probably the most powerful unit in the game and only one of these massive ships can be created per Player. It has a decent attack that fires two beams each dealing three times the weapon damage. These weapons allow the mothership to hold its own in most fights, but they tend to hit pretty weak on heavily armored targets. The ship moves very slow and is generally used for defensive purposes.
Motherships emanate a powerful cloaking field that will cloak any of your units including structures and ally units that remain within a Range of 5 of the ship. The Mothership itself will remain uncloaked and cannot be cloaked by another Mothership. This provides great cover for your army when attacking or defending and can have devastating effects if the enemy does not have an detectors nearby. However, the cloaking field usually forces the enemy to focus fire on the Mothership and it is often destroyed in most battles.
The Vortex is a powerful ability that will suck all units that enter it into a black hole. The Mothership itself cannot be sucked into the Vortex, but other friendly units still can. Units in the Vortex will not be able to attack or move for an extended period of time and forget any order they currently had. The targets cannot be attacked by weapons or spells until the effect wears off. Thus this ability is primarily used to remove a group of units from combat temporarilly. A well aimed Vortex can take out a large portion of the enemy's army allowing you to deal with a smaller force for a limited time. Once the Vortex fades, you can destroy the rest of the army like a divide and conquer technique.
Sometimes it may be wise to use this ability on your own men as well. Such situations rarely occur, but lets say your army is about to be defeated by your opponent. You could Vortex your remaining men, then send several reinforcements to help them out and combine forces once the effect fades. This ability can also be used to save your men if they are about to be hit with a Nuke .

Recall is a powerful ability which can pull a group of units to the Mothership's location instantly. If you have some men about to die from an enemy attack, you could use this ability to pull them out of combat. When attacking an enemy base, you could buff up your current attack force by recalling them straight to the battlefiend and not waist time moving them to the enemy base. A common tactic is to fly to the enemy resources and recall several units to wreck havoc on the harvesters. Recall is mana costly, but the ability can turn battles if used at the proper time.
Protoss motherships are mighty vessels that were constructed centuries ago during the golden age of protoss expansion. They were intended to act as primary command ships to lead vast armadas of protoss explorers into the darkness of deep space and bring them safely home again. Those days are long gone, and the surviving motherships later became holy shrines to the protoss, representing an honored way of life and a part of the proud history of the protoss race.
At the heart of each mothership is a huge khaydarin crystal infused with an incredible amount of psionic energy. By tapping into this energy, a mothership can warp or crack the very fabric of space and time itself. The devastating power of a mothership can wipe out squadrons of enemy ships in the blink of an eye or lay waste to entire planets. As the golden age reached its apogee, the motherships were left in place as titanic monuments at the farthest reaches of protoss exploration. It was believed that their like would not be needed again.
After the loss of Aiur, however, the motherships were called back into service from the far corners of the galaxy. Now they are crewed not with mystics and historians, but with warriors. The oldest and most powerful weapons of the protoss have been awakened and are prepared to burn the galaxy to avenge the loss of the protoss homeworld.
