The Zergling is the basic fighter for the swarm. Although they are incredibly weak and require to be in melee range of their target, they are also very cheap. Unlike other units, two Zerglings will hatch out of an egg instead of one.

Since they are weak and almost any enemy is capable of killing a few, Zerglings are only used in very large numbers. They are typically used on base raids when defense is very little but destroying structures quickly is more important. Several dozen Zerglings are capable of ripping apart a defensless base quickly. It is not uncommon to lose a large portion of your Zerglings even after a successful attack.
Burrow
Source: Hatchery
Minerals: 100
Vespene Gas: 100
Research Time: 100
Requirements: Lair

This ability is available to several Zerg grounds units including the Zergling. A burrowed unit will dig itself into the ground rendering it invisible and cannot be attacked unless a nearby detector unit can spot its location. The burrowed unit cannot attack any units, but it can see a very small distance. This ability is great for hiding your injured units to allow them to recover health or for spying at certain locations, such as expansion points or outside enemy bases to track enemy movement. Since Zerglings are relatively cheap, it is common to send several of them out to important areas of the map and keep them burrowed.

Baneling Mutation
Minerals: 25
Vespene Gas: 25
Build Time: 20
Requirements: Baneling Nest

Morphs the Zergling into a Baneling. While morphing, the Zergling cannot move or attack and the effect cannot be cancelled once started. The defensive Egg is very weak with only 50 health compared to the Larva Egg.
Metabolic Boost
Source: Spawning Pool
Minerals: 100
Vespene Gas: 100
Research Time: 110

This upgrade will increase the Zergling's movement speed to 4.69 (Very Fast) making them perfect harassers and they will practically fly on Creep. With this upgrade Zerglings can storm into an enemy base and go straight for the enemy harvesters. If the enemy defends their base, the Zerglings can usually run away since there are few units that can catch up to them with their upgraded speed. Zerglings with this upgrade will also show wings on the model.

Adrenal Glands

Minerals: 200
Vespene Gas: 200
Research Time: 130
Requirements: Hive

Increases the Zerglings attack speed by 20% ultimately providing more damage over time. Another great upgrade for any Zergling user.
